” Moving Beyond the Flexner Report: A Historical Perspective on Medical Education, and Health Equity.”
– Trevor Sutton, MD
Dr. Sutton is an Associate Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine where he is the course director of the “Integrating Medicine, Purpose, and Action through Collaborative Thinking (I.M.P.A.C.T.) Leadership Track.” Dr. Sutton is a cardiac and liver transplantation anesthesiologist and leader of the Health Equity Working Group within the Health Equity and
Professional Advancement Committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. In this role, he has implemented the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologist’s “Heath Equity Awareness and Reflection (H.E.A.R. ) Podcast”, the first podcast by an organized medical society focused on health equity in perioperative cardiovascular medicine.
Dr. Sutton’s presentation will engage the audience in reflection on the historical underpinnings for the design of the current medical education system in the United States. Seminar participants will consider the complex historical relationship between medical education, race, sex, and society. An overview of medical school admissions and medical apprenticeships in New England in the mid 19th century will extend to examination of 20th and 21st century medical education in the aftermath of the 1910 Flexner Report. The discussion will consider the framework for medical education in the United States in the context of population health needs and quality improvement through promotion of health equity. The seminar will conclude with examination of recently proposed innovations in medical education, including a brief overview a graduate medical education curriculum established by Dr. Sutton at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
