Hartford Medical Society
The vital connection
between the past, present, and future of medicine in Connecticut
The medical community in Connecticut is diverse, dynamic, unique.
At HMS, we welcome all—from students to practicing physicians, retired or semi-retired doctors to administrators and healthcare providers.
Together we celebrate the unique history of medicine in our state while promoting the latest tools and techniques leading the way into the future of health and healthcare.
Founded in 1846, the Hartford Medical Society has connected the past, present, and future of medicine in Connecticut for more than 170 years. Throughout our existence, physicians of all kinds have benefited from the knowledge, camaraderie, and service opportunities HMS offers.
The history of medicine is alive in Connecticut, and the Hartford Medical Society Library offers a unique and inspiring look at where we’ve been. Housed at UConn Health, our collection has volumes and artifacts dating back to the 1500s.
Poetry from the Civil War Hospital
The Knight U.S. Army General Hospital in New Haven was one of nine Civil War hospitals that wrote and published newspapers on-premises. Convalescent patients, soldiers, doctors, nurses, clerks, and chaplains shared their experiences—especially in poetry, a prominent feature of the time. Read their messages of empathy and understanding in the “Knight Hospital Record.”
