A Visit from the U.S. Surgeon General

Vice Admiral (VADM)
Jerome M. Adams, MD, MPH

In 2017, 955 Connecticut residents died from opioid overdoses. This already sobering fact only becomes sadder when we realize, according to data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, this was twice the national rate. Fortunately, both local and national public health organizations have been working to combat the epidemic.

This past March, the Hartford Medical Society (HMS) community and medical professionals of Connecticut gathered to hear an update from U.S. Surgeon General, Vice Admiral (VDM) Jerome M. Adams, MD, MPH, at Hartford Hospital.

The event, hosted jointly by HMS and Hartford HealthCare, featured a panel discussion on opioid and substance misuse led by Dr. Adams. Experts from the Hartford HealthCare Behavioral Health Network offered their views and expertise.

While the topic is one very close to Dr. Adams – learn why in the video transcript available here – a new pandemic was just beginning to unveil itself. The topic of COVID-19 took the title role and the more than 175 attendees were compelled to ask questions about the countries’ preparedness for such an event.

Flash forward to today and all future in-person events are now on hold. While it’s still unclear when we will be together in person again, the HMS is committed to engaging today’s leading minds like the U.S. Surgeon General to explore topics that matter most to medical professionals across the state. And we look forward to seeing you soon.
